The landscape around here is beautiful with many hills, cliffs, and canyons. Choose to take hikes or bike rides along marked trails by the waterside or to explore the cliffs and canyons.
The history of the town goes way back into the mists of time, with evidence of Roman and even Celtic occupation of the area. Pickering Castle was built in 1069 by William the Conqueror. Throughout its history, many famous kings and political figures stayed in the castle. They came to be entertained as well as to discuss important issues of the day. Hunting was one of the favourite sports of these visitors. The castle and town were surrounded by thick forests. This is an attraction you don’t want to miss seeing.
To find more about the history, take a look in The Beck Isle Museum. The art and exibits found here are a true reflection of the life and customs as well as the social and domestic developments of the area. The work of Sidney Smith, a Pickering native, is featured throughout the museum. Many special attractions are offered throughout the year.
Another fabulous museum nearby is the Eden Camp Modern History Museum. This attraction features the sights, sounds, and smells of World War II with the setting being that of a prison camp.
The Helmsley Walled Garden offers five acres of wonderful beauty including foliage, great look out points, and places to relax and eat. There are more than 150 varieties of fruit trees to look at. Originally developed as a kitchen garden to supply the Duncombe Estate. Many fruits, herbs, and spices grown here are for sale.
The Kirk Theatre is a great place to catch a high quality theatrical performance. The shows change throughout the year, but they always get raving reviews. The Ryedale Festival offers a variety of musical entertainment including classical and jazz. There are also wonderful art displays and family activities throughout the year.
